 Dijous Sant

Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum in the liturgy of Holy Week, which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus, the washing of the feet and the institution of the Eucharist. This day is known as the “Day of Brotherly Love” and marks the end of Lent.

Maó is home to the Processó del Silenci, organised by the Brotherhood of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, also known as the Brotherhood of La Sang. This is the only procession that takes place in Menorca on Holy Thursday. The procession begins at the main headquarters of the Brotherhood of La Sang, which is the oldest among the brotherhoods of Holy Week in Maó. Before this, the other seven brotherhoods of Maó leave their own parishes without carrying images or accompaniment of bands, and go to the concentration to participate in the Procession of Holy Silence, which crosses various streets of Maó. Once the procession concludes, the brotherhoods return to their respective churches following the same reverse route to that taken for the concentration of the procession.

Previously, the church of Santa Maria de Maó hosted the concert of Les Set Paraules de Crist a la Creu. This musical composition is part of the soundtrack of Holy Week in Menorca.

 Divendres Sant

The Procession of the Holy Burial is a traditional celebration of Holy Week in Menorca that represents the crucifixion and death of Jesus. The brotherhoods and brotherhoods of various cities in Menorca are in charge of its preparation and organization.

In Ciutadella, the Procession of Sant Enterrament will depart from the Cathedral with its usual route and will culminate with the Sermó de la Soledat in the Plaza de la Catedral. Simultaneously, in the Parish of Sant Bartomeu de Ferreries, the Procession of Sant Enterrament will begin towards the Parish of Santa Maria.

Subsequently, in Es Mercadal the Procession of Sant Enterrament will take place, starting from the Parish of Sant Martí. At the same time, in the Parish of Sant Cristòfol in Es Migjorn, the Procession of Sant Enterrament will also take place.

In Maó, the Davallament de la Creu will be held, an emblematic representation of the popular faith during Menorcan Holy Week. This event will be followed by a paraliturgical act that will include the singing of the Stabat Mater, motets, psalms, organ music and a play of lights. Subsequently, the Procession of Sant Enterrament will begin from the parish of Santa María where the different brotherhoods will depart to participate in the Burial procession. Next, it concludes with the pronunciation of the Sermó de la Soledat. At the end, inside the temple of Santa María, the Holy Burial will be represented.

 Dissabte Sant

The commemoration of Holy Week continues with the celebration of the Easter Vigil, which commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus and precedes Easter Sunday. It is the most important celebration of the year in Christian denominations and its ritual includes symbols of light and water. After lighting the Paschal candle, the proclamation is recited that tells the story of salvation from Creation to the death of Jesus. It is a Eucharist of hope and joy, proclaiming the victory of light over darkness. After the readings, the blessing of the water takes place. The Easter Triduum concludes with Easter Sunday.
